Serengeti National Park is located 3335km north of Arusha. Serengeti is the most famous National Park in Tanzania and consistently ranked as one of the best national parks in the entire world. It is home of the world-famous Great Wildebeest Migration, zebras, hyenas, lions, elephants, hippos, antelopes, and many more wildlife. Serengeti National Park is the farthest of the northern circuit parks from Arusha, but mostly the first inclusion on any safari itinerary due. With its sweeping savanna plains, towering rocky hills, and seemingly unending skies - the Serengeti is as much a stunning landscape as it is a place to see Africa's most iconic animals.
The Serengeti offers outstanding year round game-viewing, but is particularly popular during the Great Wildebeest Migration when some 1.7 million wildebeest and another 500,000 zebras cross the Serengeti on their way to the Masai Mara. The Wildebeest Migration sees almost 2 million wildebeest move across the Serengeti in one of nature's most memorable displays.
Between January and March, the southern Serengeti region of Ndutu plays host to the calving season in which hundreds of thousands of young wildebeest take their first stumbling steps while hungry predators watch on. April and May see the vast herd making its way across the Serengeti, and offers fantastic opportunities to see this truly colossal herd in motion. June and July are the most popular time to see the Wildebeest Migration, as the herd must cross the Grumeti and Mara rivers to reach their goal. The river crossings are not only hindered by the fast moving rivers, but also the crocodiles lurking in the shallows and the predators that constantly harry the rear of the herd. In December, it is possible to view the herd as it makes its way south once more to return to the Ndutu region for another calving season.
SELOUS GAME RESERVE
Selous Game Reserve is Africa's largest game reserve, covering 50,000 square kilometers. It is one of favorite game viewing areas in Africa and is amongst the largest protected areas in Africa. The Selous is a superb safari destination for both family safaris and African honeymoons, all the better for the ease of getting there and the lack of crowds. The park has the widest diversity of safari activities in the country, offering the boating safaris as well as standard game drives, walking safaris and legendary fly camping trips.
The Northern section of Selous is home to a network of channels and lagoons that run off the Rufiji River. This lush landscape provides a water supply for the region’s game and towards the end of the dry season the concentration of animals around these water sources is phenomenal. It is here, around the river and lakes, that the majority of the camps are based; successfully relying on the animal’s need for water to provide game viewing areas. Elephant, buffalo and lion are ‘arguably’ found in no greater numbers year round anywhere on the planet.
July through mid November is the peak season, when the dry season is raging and all the game homes in on the few permanent water sources. Sheer volume of game are witnessed putting most park in Africa to shame Selous is regarded as the true stronghold for African wild dog, a phenomenon that draws tourists.
